Sales of new homes in the U.S. rose in May to the highest they have been in the last six years. This is the strongest signal we've gotten that the housing market is recovering from the recent slow down. 

These gains followed declines in February and March that were said to be caused by harsh weather this winter. 

Economist Cooper Howes from Barclays Research says "This is the strongest level since the end of the recession and is an encouraging sign that housing activity improved in the second quarter."
