WHAT DO BOOMERS WANT?

Realtors and builders are paying close attention to the housing preferences of baby boomers. Experts note that most baby boomers prefer single-story living, recreational amenities, nature views and social activities such as arts and crafts. Price and location remain top priorities, but baby boomers also stay active and seek a particular lifestyle, says Fiona Finn of The Finn Realty Team in Fort Myers. Whether or not baby boomers are interested in 55-and-older communities depends on their age, with former FAR president and NAR regional vice president Tom Salomone noting that younger retirees care about activities while those aged 70 and up prioritize safety. Developments without age restrictions are popular with older adults who want children and grandchildren to enjoy such amenities as pools and playgrounds. Meanwhile, NAR senior public affairs associate Stephanie Singer says “age in place design" is a new trend in senior living in which wide doorways, shower grab bars and other components are included in dwellings so that retirees can remain in their homes as they age.
